This is to remind everyone to get security software for ALL of your online devices and to talk a little about Phishing.
Most people understand the need to have anti-virus packages on their home computer.
But too many people forget to ensure the same online safety on their tablet or mobile phones.
Not many of you will need me to give the definition of Security software – any computer program designed to enhance information security.
- The defence of computers against intrusion and unauthorized use of resources is called computer security.
- Similarly, the defence of computer networks is called network security.
There are different types of security software:
- Access control
- Anti-subversion software
- Anti-tamper software
- Antivirus software
- Cryptographic software
- Intrusion detection system (IDS)
- Intrusion prevention system (IPS)
Install Updates and Renew Your Computer Security Software
A common source of people being vulnerable to attack from hackers is when we don’t allow the latest upgrades from our security software packages. Another common cause or on line vulnerability is sometimes failing to renew our software packages straight away. Metaphorically this would be like your front door lock breaking and you then going 3 or 4 weeks without replacing your lock… You simply wouldn’t do this. So we must make sure we don’t do this on line.
It’s alarming to think of the impact hackers can have if they get hold of your personal details, banking details, your friends and family contact details, your family photo’s… And the devastating impact hackers can have on businesses costs millions every year.
I really understand that the business sector, especially small and medium businesses, have had a real hard time during the credit crunch. But it’s exactly these times when you need to protect your assets the most. The last thing you want is your business hampered and no access to your customer records, billing details, staff contact details, staff rota’s, banking records, etc.. Or these details stolen from you… The investment in security software will help you protect your business. It’s like having an on-line security guard working just for you!
Phishing… It’s not what some people do early on a Saturday morning on a riverbank…
Phishing is the illegal attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.
Phishing is a continual threat that keeps growing to this day. The risk grows even larger in some of the more popular and everyday used social media sites. Hackers go onto the popular social media sites and then take personal and security information that can users in different ways.
A really simple way to protect yourself from Phishing attacks is not to open emails from people or sites you don’t already know. Another is not to open emails with offers which seem too good to be true.
I know I have mentioned this one before, but if it seems too good to be true then it probably is too good to be true!
